Membership form

The activities of the Society are financed by an Annual Subscription, the amounts being calculated to cover the expected costs of each year’s operations. The Annual Subscription, presently € 40,00, is due at the beginning of each calendar-year. Sub­scriptions are maintained at the minimum level possible and the extent of activities depends on the support provided by donations. Such support is welcomed and members may like to make donations towards a specific cause or publication.

Fall 2023 Meeting

On Saturday September 9, 2023, the annual ONS-meeting in the Netherlands was held at the premises of the Leiden University.

  • 09.30-10.00 h. Welcome at the Leiden University, gebouw Lipsius (cafetaria).

  • 10.15-12.30 h. Lectures

    • Fabrice Lefèvre, International Congress of Orientalists and the Medal Awarded to General Starring - Paris 1873.
    • Khodadad Rezakhani, “Warlord” coins of Fars and Khuzistan in the early Islamic period.
    • Jonathan Ouellet, Heads or Altars: An Analysis of Sasanian Religious Culture in Early Islamic Numismatics.
    • François Gurnet, “A new Sasanian drachm type of king Zamasp (477-499 AD)”.
    • Mao Anran & Patrick Pasmans, on the coins of Elymais and Characene
  • 12.45 - 14.00 h. Joint lunch (we booked a lunch arrangement for € 15,00/p. excl. drinks) at the nearby Pakhuis Leiden, Doelensteeg 8.

  • 14.15 - 15.30 h. Continuation of the morning session and

  • Presentation of the “Festschrift in honour of Dr Ellen Raven”

  • 15.30 - 15.45 h. Viewing of the coins for the member auction.

  • 15.45 - 17.00 h. Auction of some Oriental coins and books. A number of lots have been donated to the ONS. With the proceeds of this auction, the ONS will be supported and only 10% commission will be added to the hammer price.

  • 17.00 –c. 17.30 h. Communications among members and informal get-together.

  • c. 17.45 - c. 21.00 h. A drink, followed by a diner (ca. €25,=/p. excl. drinks) in the speciality restaurant Asian Palace, Steenstraat 55, Leiden.

2022 Meeting

On Saturday October 15th., 2022, the annual ONS-meeting in the Netherlands was held at the premises of Leiden University.

Some of the topics of the meeting were:

  • François Gurnet, A new sasanian drachm type of king Zamasp (477-499 AD)
  • Seyed Omid Mohammadi, A New Countermark on Abbasid Fulus of Fars in the Name of Barmaki
  • Jonathan Ouellet, Recently new coinfinds from Bukhara Yih Tjong Ding, Chinese influence in the former Dutch East Indies as evidenced by the use of cash-like coinage.
  • Jan Lucassen, The Money of The Masses (deep monetization of India ca 1550-1850).
  • Peter Kraneveld, The role of the Chinese horoscope in numismatics.
  • Book presentations: Yngve Karlsson: “the silver coins of the Umayyad Dynasty”; Wilfried Pieper, Ancient Indian Coins (presentation by J. Lingen) ; Slawomir Liszewski, “Lithuanian countermarks on the coins of the Golden Horde” (presentation by P. Pasmans). I. A. Kolosov, V. A. Kalinin, Catalogue of Samanid dirhams (presentation by P. Pasmans).

As usual there was also be room for questions, news items, etc. There was an auction of some Oriental coins and books.

O.N.S. Meeting in Belgium on Saturday 13th November 2021

Due to the stricter Covid-19 measures in the Netherlands, the annual meeting of the Oriental Numismatic Society took place on Saturday, November 13, 2021 (10.00h – 17.30h) in the Elckerlyczaal of the historical Beguinage of Diest, Belgium. Reception with coffee and tea from 09.30h.

Some of the topics of the meeting were:

  • Jan Peter Schouten, Hindu gods on colonial coins.
  • Yngve Karlsson, A Hoard of Sasanian Silver Coins Found in Mongolia.
  • Jonathan Ouellet, The Imitation Game: An Analytical Examination of Georgian-Sasanian Coins.
  • Roland Dauwe, The colonial issues of Julia Domna in Asia and Egypt and their chronological order.
  • Ehsan Shavarebi, A ‘Jahrhundertsammlung’: New Materials for Ancient Iranian Numismatics in the Coin Cabinet of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna.
  • Kris Van den Cruyce, The Coinage of Bhutan up to the mid-20th Century.
  • book presentations by Ad Lansen and Roland Dauwe.

As usual there will also be room for questions, news items, etc. Members are invited to come forward with it.

At the end of the meeting a small auction of Oriental coins and related books was held.

Afterwards there was dinner.
